This is an authentic and fully original dining set from Eero Saarinen for Knoll International. The chairs still have their original green velvet fabric. We considered re-upholstering them, but we thought it would be a pity since the upholstered edition of this chair is quite rare. And if you manage to find an early upholstered edition, the fabric often is completely worn.
The interesting thing is how Knoll chose to upholster the Saarinen tulip chair. They made a fibreglass upholstered inlay, which is fitted on the chair. These inlay can be removed after unscrewing the bolts under the cushion. This makes it very easy to re-upholster them if desired.
When we removed one fibreglass inlay, we discovered a stamp dated 1969, what makes it quite an early piece.
Then we have the table, that has the beautiful marble top with bevelled edges as it should be. The diameter of the marble top is 107 cm / 42,5 inch. Top is in good condition with normal user marks. Some light scratched and one spot that looks like the traces of a hot plate or pan. When looking inside the foot, you see the famous single threaded end that attaches the base to the top.
The fabric of the chairs are still in reasonable condition. It has some wear, mainly at the curved top, but it is not very bothersome considering their age. The filling of the cushions is also original and is still in good condition. The thick fibreglass of the chairs is in very good condition for their age. There are no cracks or defects. Only some small traces of use like light scratches. The bases of the chairs have a couple minor chips in the side of the bottom.
Both chairs and table are marked Knoll International at the base.
This fully original, authentic and early upholstered dining set is one you won’t find very often in this original condition.
